Today's Topic: Blogs

In today's age of the world wide web, a whole world of information is available at our fingertips like never before. There are millions of websites out there and countless blogs. The only problem is, almost all of them are complete rubbish. In fact, there is no use at all for blogs aside for wasting the time of the blogger and readers. There are way too many people contributing useless information to the internet. Furthermore, I hereby assert that there should be a major overhaul done on the structure of the internet. While this is a rough draft, under the terms of my proposal, here is what the internet would look like:

  1. Corporate websites - any registered corporation would be allowed to have their own website with information about their company and of course the ability to "do things" on their sites such as make reservations, access accounts,  etc.
  2. Wikipedia - All of the world's information that is factual or semi-factual would be condensed into one site.
  3. Social media - sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and the like will be banned. People are more than welcome to speak with their friends face-to-face or over the phone. The only exceptions to the social media ban would be photo and video sharing sites such as PicasaWeb and Youtube. And even then, only content which might legitimately interest other human beings would be allowed.
  4. Email - free for personal use, but corporate users would have to pay for every e-mail sent outside of their own domain. It wouldn't be expensive, but it would lead companies to think twice before sending out e-mails.

CounterPoint: The internet will never be manageable:

The beauty of the internet and the information superhighway is its function to be free and available to everyone.  When it is so free and available, it allows itself to be at the whim of the common man.  The common Dick and Jane if you will.  And if i may be so blunt, the common Dick and Jane are dumb.  They don't know how to organize.  They don't know the correct way to send emails, or to manage blogs.
Take this blog for example.  We can certainly be considered common folk, and yet we barely expect anyone to read it!

What all that boils down to is that organizing the web, and taking control, would mean way too many Ediths, Stanleys and Jim Bobs getting confused between their email and a wiki page.
So while the potential of this blog becoming an automatic source of organized material and motivation for the world to focus their energies to be techie secretaries, it will never work.  Much like the lasers in Star Wars... light maybe can move in pulses, but we will never be able to dodge something that circles the Earth 7 times in a second.  I mean c'mon people!  Make Sci Fi at least look realistic!
